Review Indian Spice - Dunedin

I came to this place with high expectations and this place succeeded my expectations, the food was great the main dishes and the desserts were great as-well. I also ordered the mango lassi drink which was good with taste and sweet. The atmosphere was good as-well the lights and the music filled the air the service wasnt bad but good.

Been going every Monday since forever ago. Makes me look forward to the start of every week. Amazing staff, service and great food.

Good food, great value, friendly staff. I would go there every day but it would not be good for my health at my age 😕

I love Indian spice, the food is delicious the services is great and if you have any dietary needs they are happy to accommodate

There are no words to describe the excellence of this restaurant and it's food, not to mention the beautiful friendly staff. I have had a pretty awful day and the food I just ate has turned that around. I'm close to tears on how good the food was. Please do not hesitate to give this restaurant ago it's North Dunedin opposite New World. If I could leave 10 Stars out of 5 I would have. Thank you for the amazing experience I have just had xx

Finally gave it another go after a bad experience a number of years ago, and I do have to say it was quite delicious. Asked for it to be spicy and it possibly could have done with a little more heat, but to most people it would have been plenty. The portion size is quite generous, definitely enough for most people to have leftovers the next day. Curry was nice and thick and full of flavour, and the Naan was a decent size and cooked perfectly. I'll definitely be returning a lot sooner next time.

Still I can't believe it. $12.50 for a biriyani and it really fills the tummy. The cheapest, delicious tummy full food that I have ever had in New Zealand. Great value of money. If you are in Dunedin and looking for the cheapest delicious restaurant, I will definitely vouch for it. There are a wide variety of food selections here. Good customer service as well. Must visit fellas!!

We went here today for sons birthday lunch. Great selection to choose from. 3 of us chose from the main menu and 2 people just ordered off the lunch menu. Service was brilliant, very friendly staff. Clean and tidy establishment. Great prices and value for money. The meal was absolutely delicious. Best Indian meal we have had in a long time. Can not fault anything from our experience here.

Has been my go to for curry for the last 3 years. Usually get take out when I want something filling - you get that here for not much money! All the standard curries you want? These guys have got them.. great every time!

Excellent spot, very attentive and friendly service and amazing curries. The onion bhaji was a standout. Will definitely be coming back to try more of their menu :)

I rated this place as 5 star as it's one of the decent Indian restaurant here in Dunedin. I've had bad experience with others (food and/or service) It's one of the places whereby you can get $10 lunch (good selections) which comes with a soft drink, naan and curry. They have $10 money night curries. Best of all they do have student discounts which is an added bonus.

They will change the size of orders if they have high demand. I ordered Biryani two times and each is different size although I asked for medium in both. No integrity, and the lady at the reception has a horrible attitude. Avoid.

i was told that i was “very pale for a Māori,” and the given absolutely horrendous curry. wish i could give 0 stars.

Small and cozy place. Staff is more friendly and welcoming. Food is tasty and loves mango lassi(one glass is not enough to stop craving). 2 pieces of bread need to finish any curry.

Ive enjoyed my meals there everytime. The Samosa is so good! The owner is very friendly. I normally order on the phone and the food is warm when i get it. Going to try their Roti today.

Really friendly staff and they have great phone manners, which is a huge plus. They do $10 Monday curry deals which is awesome, and I love their naan. My only issue is that they are inconsistent - the first two times I went I swore I would never try their butter chicken again as it was so oily, but then I said what the heck, tried it again, and it was perfect. Every now and then my friends and flatmates go here for takeaways and once every so often the curries are super oily. I wonder if this is because one chef is not quite up to scratch? Because they are totally capable of delivering great Indian food... just not all the time!

Have had meals here a few times now as it is currently our local indian. Indian spice is quite a small restaurant, so I would suggest calling in to see if there is space before deciding to dine in. The place is relatively clean and the service is friendly.

The latest visit, my group of friends ordered the Dal Makhani, Chicken Tikka Masala and a Paneer dish. All were tasty and satisfying, served with a good amount of rice. The naan was substantial and very authentic. The only little issue I have is the fact that the food is quite mild. We have ordered hot a few times, but have still not found the meals as spicy as we would like.

I would definitely recommend coming in for lunch deals or the monday night dinners where the value seems to be very good. We noticed some empty dishes last time that were from the lunch $10 deal and the amount of food seemed very proportional to the cost.

Overall, a good place to have indian, though nothing too special, and nothing I would exactly rave about to my friends.

YUM - this was absolutely delicious and quick. My go-to indian place now. Extremely good value for money especially on mondays. Naans are great, and it is a delicious place with big servings,

Food is always great and quickly prepared.

$10 curry on a monday night is great value.

Staff are always friendly and well known in the community.

I recommend the Paneer Makhni or Malai Kofta

Since my first rating more then a year ago and today, a lot has changed. Yes, Indian Spice is a cozy place and, when crowded, the service can be a bit slow, but the quality of the food and service really improved.
I am glad I was convinced to give it a try again - my last few experiences were pleasant, the food was good and well prepared, I didn't have to wait too long.
Well done! I will be coming back again.

Usually my go to indian in Dunedin, but not anymore.

Ordered a chicken tikka masala and the amount of onion in it was just ridiculous! More onion than chicken or even sauce!! There was even completely un chopped onion 'middle' of about an inch.
Tash Goodwin
The service is great, very friendly and got my order correct.
Food was made quickly and was absolutely delicious.

Spice levels are more adjusted to our kiwi lower tolerance for spice, so if you like a bit of spice I'd say go for hot. The medium was more like a mild with a hint of spice that builds quite nicely.

Portions are exactly the same as what you would get anywhere else in Dunedin.

Very reasonably priced as well, will definitely be making it my go-to takeaway.

I'll be back for $10 curry night, such a great deal.

I have been dining at Indian Spice for the last two years and I love it! My friends an I always try and make for the Monday $10 curry night which is a great deal! The owners are very friendly and always make sure to come and talk to use when we are there. The meals are big and I always manage to take so home for lunch the next day! It is a small place but they try an accommodate people as much as possible. Crucial to book on a Monday! and their garlic and cheese naan is epic!

I've had many great takeaway meals from Indian Spice in NEV. I disagree with the other reviewer on this page about the portion sizes in the metal pots if you dine in. Both times that I have dined in I needed to take the leftovers home as was unable to finish it (due to the amount of food!) which makes for a great lunch the next day of course. My partner and I are vegan, and the staff that I've dealt with over the phone have been very accommodating and helpful towards vegan customers. They even come up with off-the-menu curries that they can create specially for you (e.g. vegetable masala) if you just ask, "What are your vegan options?". The food is always fresh and delicious, and we keep going back.

Used to like this place but it has been going downhill for ages. Why they don't move to a shop nearby that is bigger than a matchbox i don't know. Just got a chicken kadai and garlic naan - it was Monday night so very busy - it was obviously cooked in a rush - tasted nothing like it usually does and the chicken meat was horrible. Tasted like it was contaminated by another recipe (they use the same base for most sauces) and was devoid of anything good. Will vote with my feet and not go back, as it keeps getting worse with every visit.

Best curry I have ever eaten. Very good corkage rates. You have to be quick on monday night ($10 CURRY) to get a seat. The service is friendly and helpful. My only gripe is the waiting time. Other than that I am always happy to enjoy their curries. My favourite dish is the lamb boona.

Truly abysmal is the only way I can describe this place. The worst service and food I've had in a long time - not just at curry restaurants. When we first arrived, the waitress just keep cleaning tables and didn't even acknowledge we were there. When she eventually got to the counter we were made to feel like a pain in backside more than customers.

When the food finally arrived (cold and late I might add) it was the most tasteless curry I've ever had. There was so much cream in mine I could have sworn I was drinking a milkshake and my friend's Rogan Josh tasted like ketchup.

As we settled the bill the waitress didn't say anything to us, until we spotted that they had over-charged us for a naan bread we didn't order.

Will never go back there again.

Got my curry delivered last night and it was burnt. So was my naan bread. Very, very disappointed.

This place has good food, but the service is terrible and the take away service is even worse! We ordered our meal at 6.30pm and I got told it would be 20 mins. My husband was there on time and had to wait until 7.20 pm... we won't be going there again!

Best Butter chicken!! Have been going to Indian Spice NEV for the past 6.5 years, 2 years in North Dunedin now i am in Musselburgh and still buying from this store, i wouldn't dream of going any where else. Have dined in twice was a good time area a little small. Will be getting the usual tonight again. Thanks Guys!

Indian Spice North Dunedin sell the worst food I ever had. Don't know how ppl like their food. I will never go back there again and I suggest ppl as well not to go there. (Indian spice North Dunedin). Curry taste like dont know what they cook. Its cheap but not worth it.

We have eaten here numerous times because we, generally speaking, enjoy the food.

However, our most recent visit was less than pleasant. We dined in a group of four and had to wait over an hour for our food to arrive while neighbouring tables who arrived after us were served first. No one bothered to check on us. The waitresses seemed more annoyed with customers than friendly which thoroughly spoiled our dining experience. The food still deserves four stars but the service was catastrophic.

And even though a sign proclaimed that when you spend 50 Dollars you receive a free onion Bhaji, we didn't receive ours (even though we spent over 60 bucks). Sorry, Indian Spice, we won't be back!
Love Indian
We ate her on our holiday to New Zealand - it was fantastic wish we had it hear =
the chefs special tea yummy and the staff were really attentive and very very nice and helpful - will recommend this resturant to evryone i know going to Dunedin
i have a copy of their menu i bought it home with me -

the nicest indian resturant i have been to in a long time - well done

this place is great, the price is right for what you get, especially take away. The lamb madras is very good but if you like spice make sure to get it hot as the mild and medium are quite tame
