Review Friendly Khmer Satay Noodle House - Dunedin

It was a great money-to-value ratio! The vegatarian satay with tofu beat all my expectations. The fried noodled with beef were also scrumptious and versatile. Staff were very friendly and accomodating. There was also a wide array of chilled beverages, especially Bundaberg drinks. Decor was simple, yet tasteful! We would gladly return here again in future. There are certainly meals here that meet almost everyone's requirements.

Yum!!! Popped in because the restaurant I was trying to go to was closed during their opening hours (for the 4th time). I'll stop trying to go there now because this place is awesome! Had the hot and spicy fried noodles and they were on point. Not spicy enough, but that's a me problem not a friendly khmer problem🤣 and they have chilis and hot sauce on the table so I'm all good. Super flavorful and well balanced, I just like to eat fire 🔥 Staff was great too!

Satay here is incredible - along with massaman/ panang curry. Hot and Spicy Noodles are also good. Sometimes a bit lacking with variety in the veges but still very tasty! The sweetest aunties own this place. Portion sizes are large too. *Med Chicken Supreme Satay I ordered for reference

Heard that this restaurant has good Cambodian food which is hidden in the quieter area of Dunedin city centre. There are varieties of soup noodles, fry noodles, and rice dishes in their menu. Three of us tried three different types of food, and we had chicken rice, seafood soup noodles, and the pork char siew soup noodles. The seafood soup noodles were really flavourful with generous helpings of seafood.....a must try here! The pork char siew soup noodles was a bit off because of the reddish colour, but it was good too. The chicken rice was delicious and served with broccoli and shreddered chicken.....recommended to try. Because we liked this place so much, we came back for the other food. I had the hot and spicy fried noodles, which was also nicely done. The chicken wantons with seafood soup were just as tasty. This place I heard was once awarded the first place for cleanness. Can't help noticing how clean and tidy the kitchen is on my way to the toilet. This place is wheelchair accessible and to the toilet too with a proper ramp.

I love this place so much. The satay is so good, I've been eating their satay since I was a child which was a long time ago now, and even though I no longer live in Dunedin, I always visit this restaurant every time I visit because it's my favourite. The meal sizes are excellent, and the staff were very friendly. I got takeaway and didn't need to wait very long either. Always recommend!

My favourite place to bring new friends in Dunedin, delicious food exploding with flavour and handmade drinks that can't go wrong. Highly recommend classic or supreme Satay and iced lemon drink

We were here attracted by the amount of people eating here so we decided to give it a try, and we did a good decision! We had a "combination" noodle soup with beef and chicken and it was full of flavor, delicious. We also had a very good fried rice. The soup is huge and the rice was of good size. Prices were around 11-12 dollars per plate. The service was good and fast even thought we were there right at lunch time. Too bad we found this place in our last day in Dunedin, otherwise we would be back again.

Wow super super busy, we walked in about 5.35pm and walked out at 6.30pm, as we ordered they were inundated with phone orders, takeaways, delivery orders and eat in customers. The prices are great and the food was delishious. We had chicken satay, handmade sauce not commercial, green chicken curry, spicy seafood soup and very spicy chicken. Would suggest ordering earlier or waiting until after the rush hour if you are in a hurry 🙂

The original and still the best beef satay. Always friendly, always delicious. Whether you dine in or takeaway, you'll be left totally satisfies.

Really great food, price, and customer service! I asked if I could have Tom Yum made vegan and she definitely did without any problem :) the woman definitely understand what veganism is and we had a large bowl of Tom yum noodle soup for $14 which was delicious! We will definitely be back again as they have other vegetarian options and other meals that can made vegan.

Very friendly, fast and the food was great. My wife had the satay chicken burger and I had chicken rice. Both were very yummy and the price was very reasonable. Would recommend to anyone coming to Dunedin to come in for some satay and conversation.

I drove 4 hours from Queenstown literally just to have Friendly's Tom Yum Noodle Soup. If this doesn't show how much I love this place, nothing will. Best Tom Yum noodle soup in NZ. I've tried all other places but none makes it half as good as Friendly's. This restaurant was what helped me get through Uni. I came here every week, to the point where as soon as the guy at the counter saw me walk in, he turned around to say my order, and when I made it up to the counter, the efpos machine was all ready for me to pay (customer-restaurant relationship goals lol). Sadly, I no longer live in Dunedin so I can't come here so often but I will forever cherish my memories of this place and the Tom Yum.

Ordered the supreme pork satay and upon first bite was I blown away! The satay flavor was exquisite, sweet savory and smooth all at once, and meat was tender yet chewy and the vegetables easy to munch through. The rice was also soft and cooked well, and the ratio of sauce to rice was perfect! I ate everything on my plate and was very satisfied. For the price, this dish is definitely worth it!! Also tried a satay beef burger. Amazing for the price! It's just a basic bun with coleslaw and beef but the beef is delicious and tender and you can't beat the quality for the price! Lovely customer service too recommend!!!

I have been dinning here on and off since I was a young girl and have always absolutely loved the experience. All of the staff are wonderful and friendly. And the food is amazing for the price. I love coming and visiting the restaurant when I'm in town, for anything from breakfast to dinner to a snack. 100% recommend, my fav dish is combination noodle soup.

Takeaway or dine-in experience is always enjoyable. Good value, tasty food.

Amazing for the price! It’s just a basic bun with coleslaw and beef but the beef is delicious and tender and you can’t beat the quality for the price! Lovely customer service too recommend!!!
5/5 for price and quality!

Came by with a friend who recommended the place for lunch. The menu had a large range of different Asian food items. It wasn't until after ordering that we found out he normally comes here for the chicken noodle soup.

I had the fried rice noodles with beef. It was ok. Flavours were a bit towards the European palette. Also tried another fried noodle and it had the same flavour. The soup base for the soup noodle was nice though.

Although they have a lot of items to choose from I think that the soup noodle would probably be the best bet.

Nice and friendly environment. The menu had a decent variety so there was a lot of options to choose from.

Taste: 4/5
Portion: 5/5
Location: 5/5
Price: 3.5/5
Service: 4/5

Hands down one of my favourite restaurants in Dunedin. I especially LOVE their chicken noodle soup and for only $8, it is such a bang for your buck! If you start feeling sick, GO HERE because you will be healed after you have a bowl of their noodle soup. It's just a humble wee shop with nothing too fancy, which always makes you feel cosy + all the staff are all super friendly. They give you chicken bones for free if you ask so you can pick at that while you wait for your meals. Also, if you're feeling under the weather, throw in a spoonful of chilli to unblock your nose... Love your work!! A solid 10/10 for Friendly - @gastrogeeny (full review on website)

I really loved my satay dish! the portion was big enough to fill me up and i was able to take my leftovers home for later. the staff are friendly and accommodating.

First of all, they don't seem very friendly at all.

Pad thai was very average.

Combination noodle soup was nice but there's no greens in the bowl, not even spring onions.

Satay supreme was good too if you like the sweet peanut taste.

Will go back to try the curry noodles and the homemade beef balls.
Ethan Liaw
Good lunch time quick bite as usual just like back in the days when I use to study that.
Their noodle soup is unique and I think it’s a flavour you prob can’t get any where else in New Zealand. And still to this day u can get a free bowl of chicken bone when you eat there!
Cheers for bringing back good memories!
Absolutely love this place! In my 4 years of being a student down here I have regularity visited friendly. The tom yum and hot and spicy noodles are so good :)

Favourite place to grab a bite to eat during study breaks. Cheap and affordable for my poor student budget when I want to get a cheap and filling meal! Staff are always "friendly" (pun intended) and will always go there 👍👍👍
Claudia
Whenever my uni friends and I are on a break, friendly's is one of the places we will always visit. The inexpensive comfort food ticks every box. I would recommend the soup/noodle dishes as these come in massive tasty portions and try avoiding typical Asian take out food like stir fry or sweet and sour as they tend to be a bit stodgy and underwhelming. Just make sure you know what to order and you will be extremely happy!! (Also don't forget to ask for the tastiest chicken bones if you're into that)

I always come here for lunch when i come to Dunedin for a day trip and i keep coming back as the food is really tasty full of flavour and it's really affordable, $8 for a regular dish and $10 for a large i personally find that the $8 portion size is filling. The staff here are really polite and there is always a free jug of water on the counter to have with your meal. The food is always nicely presented and cooked quickly i would recommend the oyster sauce stir fry with pork Yum! love this place.

I adore this place, there's nothing like this in Auckland. Meals are so cheap ($8) and are huge. They also have great vegetarian options and non-satay dishes.

Lovely friendly people, like their name. Great value for money. There spring roll are defiantly worth trying!
I always find their meals so delious and they are quick to make it for you. Great place for a large group cos the menu is HUGE and everyones happy.
Erin
Really love this place mainly because of the huge portions you get for a low price, the large variety of menu selections and of course the food is tasty! If you want a great value dinner or lunch, this is the place to go. I've been here a bunch of times, and every dish I've gotten is delicious! Sometimes the staff have brought out the wrong dish to serve when eating in a larger group, but they are really lovely about correcting it!

For cheap Asian eats in Dunedin this place is great. Low-end tables and decor but meals cheap ($8 std or $10 for large) and tasty. Try the satay supreme! Big jugs of water for free drinks. The entire kitchen is on open display and all the staff are uniformed and wear hair nets etc. so I feel more confident eating here than at many other of the local low-end 'student' restaurants. The staff is mainly older Asian ladies and never big smiles or much conversation - perhaps a cultural thing. But they cook good :)

In summary, if you don't need fancy atmosphere and just want a reasonable hot meal for a low price you won't be disappointed.

My beef foo yong egg was beautifully presented, almost like an omelette all full of good stuff draped neatly over an igloo of rice. It was delicious, but I struggled to eat the whole food mountain!

I found one dessert on the menu: fruit salad and ice cream for an absurd $4. This would have capped off a perfect meal with a 5-star rating . . but . . . "sorry we don't have any ice cream today".

Hmmmmm, in a generous mood I MIGHT assume I picked a bad day, but I suspect/fear they simply don't offer that any more. (I'll find out next time I go).

In meantime, I HATE places offering menus then denying them (how easy is it to simply cross out one line on each menu ?) - so just 3 stars.

Amazing value, friendly staff, amazing food
I shouted my son and his 5 flatmates out for dinner here being poor starving students!. AND the food was excellant, what a fabulous find. 8 meals and drinks for approx $100 is the bee's knees!
Stu Taylor
Easily the best value for money in town. I always go for the beef or chicken satay noodle soup here and I am never disappointed. Nothing fancy, just straight up excellent satay meals and friendly service. Places like these are what makes Dunedin cuisine.

My friends and I go there once a week at least. Good, hearty food at an excellent price. Not fine dining but what would you expect for $8 a meal?
Douglas Sekone-Fraser
Great food for the price, the little Asian ladies are very friendly as well. Huge portions especially the soups, and the burgers are a must try.
Hanna Bae
I have to say, despite its name, the staff at this eatery are not at all very friendly. However, the food seems to be tasty and is affordable.
JoJo Fife
Great for a quick cheap meal. Huge portions as well!

This is one place in Dunedin where I've never ever been disappointed. The prices and servings are great, and the lovely ladies are really sweet. Service is pretty fast too. Try the satay burger - great bite at an awesome price.

Personally, I love the Friendly Satay Noodle House.
Commonly referred to as "The Friendly", it sells amazing Satay, and Chinese cuisine, including their infamous $3.50 satay burgers (either chicken or beef). These burgers are the cheapest lunch you can find in Dunedin City if you know where to find them.
Check them out if you are looking for a cheap lunch, or a quick dinner.
