I grew up in a fish and chip shop so I know my stuff, and The Smokehouse Café is great. We had the basic deep sea cod and kumara chips and they were all done to perfection AND there is malt vinegar on the tables. The only minor miss is the spring roll pastry was overly thick, but overall I was quite impressed.
One of the best fish and chips in New Zealand. Choose the Ribaldo Deepsea Cod. OMG it's done to perfection here. 2nd time in three days. Had to bring some family member to try it. They also agree. Well done steakhouse team. Awesome.
Nice big tables friendly staff . vinegar and serviettes on tables. Very clean and nice vibe. Gelato and smoked fish didn't try but fish n chips were perfect.
Delicious fish and chips, very reasonably priced and very generous servings .. perfect after a day cycling Nelson to Mapua via Rabbit Island.
The Smoke house has the best fish and chips in the country. I do love some good chips soft on the inside crispy on the outside. honestly to die for the fish was much the same insanely good. The shop was spick an span and the employees were looking like they were having a good time. The smokehouse overall holds a great standard off work and there product follows suit I will be coming back 10/10 great food.
4/5, chips slightly overcooked & over salted.
The Gurnard was incredible however, worth paying extra for, even though it was half the size of the more common snapper.
Perhaps the best fish and chips I've tried and a definite highlight of our trip in NZ. The only caveat is that eating with your fingers won't be to everyone's tastes!

Best fish and chips! We had the blue cod, chips and squid rings. All were fantastic. Sat next door at Rimu wine bar to eat the fish and chips and enjoy a wine tree :) Greag systems at the Smokehouse and you can easily see the wait time, so, you know when to come back from exploring the lovely views and shops nearby
