The environment here is unique, with great military memories. I had double cheese beef burger (note that the online menu as of now is out of date, the menu in the restaurant is the latest). The chips were good, the burger was average. Most food items are between $15 - $20 NZD, so value for money is good (in Christchurch standard).
The RSA is my local and I love this place. The service is always friendly and welcoming, beer's always good, and food ain't bad either. They play a great playlist and there's live music on the weekends, including (at time of review) the awesome Janice Gray and trio. You can strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone here and it's like chatting with an old friend. Upstairs is a fully kitted out function room which is perfect for corporate events, large groups, has its own bar and projector/sound system - my work had our mid winter function there and it was perfect!
Got the catch of the day - $26.50. Lovely presentation, potatoes were good, but not very much food on the plate.
A good staple. Decent quality food. Pleasant surroundings. Can't go wrong if looking for a nice place for snacks and a drink or a full meal. Great bit of history around the walls

What a cool place. Part of the Returned and Services Association (RSA).Set in nice new building close to downtown Christchurch which has a striking frontage with wall of remembrance on the outdoor seating area. On arrival was greeted by the staff who was polite, considerate and helpful. While waiting for our meals there was a lot of memorabilia to look at set in a spacious Restaurant and TV's show programs. The restroom was clean and tidy. The meals were got quality and reasonably priced also good coffee served. If your into good meals great atmosphere, Trenches is a place to go while in Christchurch.
Great atmosphere on Saturday nights, good food can't complain for the price and the specials they do every night. Steak night is Saturday and Tuesday I think, $15.
The jazz band playing was fabulous and the roast pork I ate was very nice. The staff and other guests were welcoming and friendly.
