Excellent tortellini and broccolini. I was in a hurry and thankful the food came out super fast. Great presentation and okay portions. I was okay with not feeling sick from eating too much
We were greeted by the waiter. However, dinner was not served until 5.30pm. So, we decided wait and ordered a bottled of red. After waited 30mins a waiter told us the special of the day. We both ordered two mains. They were fish of the day and venison . Fish dish had less salt, but still tasty. However, venison were medium rare but burnt from the outside. It was quite disappointed night for us.
Had dinner there - food is amazing and the service us just as good. Expect to pay Auckland prices though. for a great night out highly recommended! Go do it!
Amazing meal and service.....
An expensive place to grab an afternoon drink, but a great spot to relax with friends or a loved one. There is indoor, covered and outdoor seating with a TV under the covered patio. There is a spot for a bar under the covered patio, but I've never been there when anyone was running it. The bar space inside is small, but there is a formal dining area that takes up most of the room. It's a very dark space.
Be prepared to drop some gold coins for food and drinks here. Mini burgers off the bar menu were $15 and a plate of olives were $8. They have a reasonable amount of beers on tap and a full bar as well, so you can quench whatever tastebuds you'd like. They occasionally have live music, but so does everywhere else in Merivale, so don't feel obligated to pay their high prices just to hear a band. If money is no object, check this place out because the menu does look appetizing.
I've visited JDV once or twice a month...sometimes more....since the day it opened. I'm not one of those people that has to be 'seen'..in the right places or otherwise....I simply enjoy good wine, good food and good service...and without question...throughout the years JDV has delivered without exception....the wine list has always been good, original and not reliant on the big players...delivered in quality glass ware...and thank you thank you....at the correct temperature....the food is consistently good, with a touch of lightness and always with a twist of innovation....delish.....and the service....undoubtedly...always attractive on the eye....yes, even appreciated from a...dare I say it, middle aged female perspective......is very good 95 % of the time....
Well Done JDV....I struggle to think of others in the Canterbury market that can match you.....and that is why I ...Rural Dweller....not one of the beautiful people....keep coming back.....Salute...
We arrived and JDV was very busy but staff were very accommodating, we wanted a special meal and we got it. Matt was our waiter/manager for the night and his service could not be faulted. The food was fantastic from the fresh dukha to the pork belly to the dessert complete with moon rocks lol. Extensive wine list with a wide selection available by the glass. We enjoyed dessert wines and Matt even let us sample some others. Evening finished with staff ordering a cab for us and wishing us a good nite. Top Knot ch guys
This place is usually a steady old warhorse, great food and service and still going strong.
We went there between Xmas and New Year on a sunny day. The staff were doing their best, but were over whelmed. The food was fantastic (if slow, like everthing else that day). We promise to book in future!

Popped in here for a late lunch. The food was really impressive, pleasantly surprised and the best polenta that I've had. The welcome when we arrived was a bit awkward and the service was a little hesitant and distant, overall a very pleasant lunch considering I always thought it was a bar first and foremost.
We hired the Veranda bar for a Birthday and I was very impressed with the service. Food arrived on the agreed schedule and without prompting on the night, they were very accommodating allowing us to bring a cake purchased elsewhere and provided plates and cutlery to cut and serve it. We will definitely think of them the next time we have an event
I had the pleasure of dining at JDV in the last month. I was with a large birthday party group who were not easy to wait upon. The maitre'dhotel handled the situation with aplomb.
After a starter of Flat Breads (Duck Parfait, Salt and Pepper Squid good too) I had the "Fish of the Day" which was beautifully cooked. There were some complaints that the duck (in the duck salad that 3 out of the dozen, or so, in our group had) was a bit tasteless owing to the removal of the duck's skin. Other than that most seemed to have been very happy with their meals.
The atmosphere was good for our Saturday 9 November lunchtime reservation. The bar and wait staff thoroughly professional. It was good to see JDV keeping up their renowned high standards.
Loved this little place.. But I'd heard rave revues about the oyster dishes,but when we got there they had none.. A table full of people walked out because they had only chosen JDV for the oysters.. Friendly staff and beautiful food otherwise :)
Excellent Sunday roast beef tender, Yorkshire puddings, crunchy roast potatoes with all the trimmings. Highly recommend to you all. Very large servings.
Presentation was excellent and taste worthy of a fine dining experience. We were the only ones in the restaurant that night so the ambience was quite special.
Super evening out, food and staff excellent, would recommend, fillet steak great, wonderful wine list and cheeses very generous
NIce feeling about the place. It was quiet when we visited but I can imagine it cd be quite lively wen full of locals. Squid rings... Great. Would I visit again. Mist definitely. ,
Had a duck salad. Was very taste salad. Great value and just right size for lunch.
