Service great, food excellent. Salad items were quite fresh, good choice of beers. Reasonable value for money. Helpful with water for our dog.
Visited here for a family members birthday. Service was alright seated fast and given menus and drinks order taken relatively fast. Good entrees we had the hot cheese dip (which I would recommend this to everyone) and guacamole. Then a variety of the mains, I personally had a chicken enchilada which was good and all others seemed happy with their meals. The food reminded very much of home cooked meals not presented all that well, but hearty and warm. The setting is a unique environment and has good lighting and music.
Overall good food, service could be better, and price is reasonable would recommend for a casual night out with friends or family.
Best Mexican in Christchurch. Great service and lovely staff. Food is always fresh, well presented and fast. Great value for money as the meals are a good size. Nice little restaurant with a nice atmosphere. We always go here as you are never disappointed.
This place is quietly tucked away in Sumner, it has quite the character from within. The lovely waitresses were super polite and we chatted away with them throughout our meal. The food here is ok, I've tried various Mexican food from different traditional restaurants so I think this one is ok and pretty average. As Christchurch doesn't have many Mexican food joints this is quite nice for those who are craving spicy Mexican flavours.
Pretty hard to find if you aren't a local. Used Zomato to find somewhere nice to eat while visiting Christchurch.
Called ahead to make a booking which probably wasn't needed. Service was great. Shown to our table and didn't need to wait long for our drink orders.
Great selection of a mixture of Mexican and south American . Opted for the tasting platter which was amazing. Four meals to chose from. Flavors were amazing. I will return if I'm ever in Christchurch again..

We really enjoyed our night out at the Headless Mexican last night. We were greated on arrival and shown to our table and given the menu to peruse. After just the right amount of time we were asked if we would like to order drinks and these arrived soon after. We ordered the cheese dip to share this was very tasty and we had no trouble finishing it. I liked how I could order a soft taco as I am not a big eater and it was just the right amount for me with lovely flavours. The main meal my husband ordered was certainly a decent size and tasted great with the spices. The shaken margarita was a highlight for me, I could have settled in to have a few more and I thought a good price at $12.00. Service was very good, the atmosphere was great, the restaurant was warm on a chilly evening and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back.
I have eaten here twice and the food was delicious both times. The atmosphere of the place is really nice, too. It has a lot of character! The location is splendid, too as you can go for a walk on the beach after dinner.
We really love the Headless Mexican, especially the delicious South American dishes and the margaritas. This is our favourite restaurant in Sumner based on the combination of service, atmosphere and tasty food. Very family friendly too which is a bonus. Now we live in Auckland it is on our must visit list every time we return to Chch.
I used to come here pre-eathquakes so it had been a while and I was keen to see the improvements under new ownership (great review on Stuff, by the way).
The food was great, fresh tasty ingredients, and all presented nicely. The usual strawberry habanero margarita option was replaced by pineapple habanero and it was an interesting combination. My friend's blood orange margarita was very nice. The cheesecake dessert was good and i loved the lemon curd.
It was a bit noisy sometimes and my friend and I had trouble hearing each other, plus we were a bit cold. I think this was due to the bare walls and design of the echo-ey rooms. But we liked the numerous plants and the nod to Frida Kahlo in the corner.
Friendly, attentive service, and it was nice to have a chat with the new owners as we were leaving. Thanks for an enjoyable Birthday meal, and I wish you both continued success :)

This is a very nice place and very attentive service and recommendable. Post covid quite a few places in nz have improved with their service and catering.
We tried this place first time and the restaurant wasn’t very busy. The manager was very nice and explained.
The food is commendable that it does have some sort of mexican-ness to it. I’d say much better than what you get at everyday Mexican places..
We had mango chicken nachos large 28$: the corn chips were good and so was the salsa. The guacamole although felt like it was dished out of a can / supermarket jar. The serving was small compared to the price.
Then we had quesadilla cheese 14$. This was ok. And worth the price; what you get at any palce.
Chicken Enchilada 31$ was also an ok serve. But it was bland. However with the hot sauce it tasted much better.
Fajitas (fish and prawn) 59$. I think overpriced but my partner didn’t think so. it does feed 2 people though. Try once if never had before.
And lastly churros 12$ which are certainly recommended. The chocolate was nice and creamy rather than something out of a sauce bottle.
Overall certainly worth visiting once. I feel though almost all the items are supermarket sourced rather than in hand made, except for the churros maybe. So kind of fast food with some handy touch.. However taste wise 4/5. Price wise 3/5. Overall 3.5..
Went here last Saturday for brunch to break out of the "bacon, eggs bene, etc" cycle. Food was fantastic. Nice size dishes at a good price. Great tastes and a healthy delicious brekky/lunch option. What the hell. Suns over the yardarm - tried a Margherita and a Bloody Maria. Both were very moreish. Staff are great and whole visit was so enjoyable we went back next day. Highly recommend the Huevos Rancheros and Chili on Sourdough toast. Have to get back soon to sample the dinner menu. Looking forward to that. Thanks Guys. See you soon 🤩😋
Excellent service, great food, highly recommend the nachoes with brisket, the bombas, and ceviche. Wholesome, healthy food that won’t weigh you down. 4 mains, a range of side and a few beers for a family of 4 came to $170…better value than some places we’ve been to recently. The place is under recentish change of ownership and my opinion is that the quality has vastly increased.
Great Food and Friendly Staff
Went there last week with my husband for dinner. Ordered Jalapeno Cauliflower, fried chicken in bufflo sauce and frozen Magareta.
The cauliflower was cooked just right and yummy with the Jalapeno sauce. The fried chicken tender, juicy and tasty with the bufflo sauce. The frozen Magareta was just devine with quite a punch!
Truely the best mexican meal I have had in NZ, and the place was cosy with friendly atmosphere and mexican décor.
All in all it was a great night out with my husband and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Absolutely loved our meal at The Headless Mexican in Sumner. The food was so fresh and full of flavour. The staff are super attentive and friendly. Such a great restaurant to have in this awesome Beachside village.
Best place in town for corn chips and dip! The queso dip is insane. I had to order some to take home with me after our meal.
Frozen margaritas are my favourite also.
Will be back regularly for sure!
