Awesome food, awesome service and awesome atmosphere! A small but perfect selection of authentic Taiwanese foods with good portions. The bubble tea is just like from Taiwan, if you haven't tried it, you must give it a try! You can definitely tell it is owned by Taiwanse, as the staff are so warm and welcoming, and always happy. I never leave here feeling dissapointed, whether eat in or takeaway.

As we started off our food blog journey with Little Taipei, it seems more than fitting that they deserve our first review. Little Taipei situated all the way down at the end of Papanui Road, Christchurch is a relatively small restaurant providing with delicious cuisines of Taiwan.

As we visited the place relatively late during the afternoon we were lucky enough to not deal with a crowd. Hearing quite a lot about their famous Signature Giant Chicken Cutlet we were bound to order that one. After skimming through the menu card for a while, we finally decided to what to order. The order contained:
1. Signature Giant Chicken Cutlet
2. Deep Fried Beancurd
3. Combination Taiwanese Thick Soup w/ Vermicelli
4. Braised Minced Pork Rice
5. House Milk Tea w/ Pearl

Overall, everything was up to our standards. The chicken cutlet was nice and crispy with the chicken being perfectly cooked and accompanied with pickled cucumber. The beancurd was also good in taste but unfortunately the quantity did not impress. A tad bit more would've been perfect.

The thick noodle soup was pretty filling. That's one way to describe it. As I ordered the large portion the quantity was a lot, plus it also contained quite a lot of ingredients such as seafood, pork, shrimps and mushrooms to accompany alongside the noodle and the soup. The minced pork rice was fairly moderate. The pork tasted good although the rice didn't really pack a punch.

I would recommend to try this place out. Most definitely for their Giant Chicken Cutlet. That is their signature dish and it stands out over all the others. Mainly this place is pretty good for the fried dishes in its menu. The service is also friendly, the staff are helpful and their for your needs.

Overall Little Taipei was an enjoyable experience and we will be definitely visiting more often!

Authentic Taiwanese food and great service. This place gets busy so do make a booking in advance.

The chicken cutlet was massive. I really liked the batter - it was very flavourful and light. The chicken wasn't dry and was perfectly crispy. I also liked the picked vegetables that came with it.

We also tried the braised pork with rice - the pork was soft and melted in your mouth. However there wasn't enough of it for the large serving of rice that it came with. The soya sauce egg also had good flavour.

The bits of fried radish cake were lightly battered and soft on the inside. It was plain radish cake though so not much flavour until dipped in the accompanying sauce.

Loved the ambiance here - the bar had a roof that was like a traditional house and the wallpaper was of a street view in Taiwan. The tables and stools were also traditional lacquered wood and had handy hooks for you to hang your bags. Staff were friendly and the food came fast which is always a plus.

My mother and I are taiwanese and came here recently, service is average but the food is great. Traditional taiwanese noodle were delicious and will remind you the difference in taste between Chinese noodle from Taiwanese noodles.
The stand out in this restaurant is the amazing sizes of the drinks.
Servings of the drinks are massive and the ice teas are delicious.
Will be going again shortly!

My friends took me to this restaurant while I was visiting in Christchurch.

Upon entry the restaurant has a good atmosphere, the staff greeted us promptly and took us to our table.

I soon realised the stools accompanying the tables were just like the ones you would find in the more rural places in Taiwan! Paired brilliantly with the brick interior and Taiwana furnishings, which bring you a sense of early Taiwan and the sweet charm of a country home/village. Very nostalgic.

One of the reviewers mentioned it was a bit claustrophobic inside - this was not the case at all! There were plenty of room between the tables and you could sit as far or as close with your mates at the table on the chair/stool as you wished. The same could be said for the lanterns - they looked well secured and have a good distance between the bulb and paper so I'm sure they are fine and won't pose a fire risk. Did I mention they were very charming too?

The food was very good! It tastes just like home - we had the popcorn chicken which was hot, crispy, tender and flavourful. The braised goods were on point and tasted just like the ones you'd find at a street stall or served as a small dish in a eatery. My friends had the hot pot which was and the 3-cup chicken set, which I tasted and it were very delicious and the flavours reminded me of home! You even received a complimentary soup with unlimited refills with a set meal (I also has some of the seaweed-based soup, it was again, very on point and tasted just like the ones I used to have around my neighbourhood eateries).

I had the classic beef noodle bowl - the noodles were just right, nice and chewy but soft. The soup was a lighter broth that I expected (which isn't a bad thing!) and sweeter than the regional variety I was used to; but still delicious nonetheless!

The drinks menu contains very classic Taiwan-style tea drinks and such, my friends got some but I opted not to as I had my eye on one of the desserts - hot grass jelly!

This was the highlight of my trip. The grass jelly tasted even better than the ones I have in Taiwan, due to the owners' hand-making the kumara and taro balls themselves; which ended up in ultimate deliciousness and texture. The balls were soft, "al-dente", chewy, smooth and had a good texture compared to the typical factory made ones you'd commonly find at drink stalls in Taiwan. I loved it so much I went back and had another meal with it for dessert before I left Christchurch that weekend.

After tasting many Chinese mixed Taiwanese style food in New Zealand, I am lucky to find a place that is really authentic Taiwanese food.
The decoration and set up of the little restaurant brought me back to the time that I was in Taiwan.
Food is nice and delicious, I personally love the giant chicken cutlet. but the combo +3.50 with a classic green tea is a bit pointless in my opinion. You may just go to the bubble tea selection with 2 dollar or more.
There are many selections of drinks, and also a lots of topping as well. I am surprise to find that I can order winter melon tea (冬瓜茶) and white pearl (韓天), which I hardly see in New Zealand.
Overall, I enjoyed the food here a lot. and when I miss my hometown I could come here.

Taiwanese Restaurant that serves meals and also bubble tea. We ordered the Taiwanese style pop-corn chicken, Deep fried black pudding, Braised minced pork rice bento and the Taiwanese style beef noodle soup (I forgot to take a photo before eating). The flavours are very good and taste authentic. The portion size is a little small for the price paid in my opinion. Otherwise, a great place.

Nice little place, the ambiance and decor is spot on, only wish their food was to the same standard, which isn’t bad per se, but kind feel it’s not quite there either.

Authentic Taiwanese street food, good menu selections, really nice chilly sauce. Taiwanese owner operated. Love all the dishes we ordered, quick table service. Good bubble tea with well cooked bubbles, the largest size is humongous!!. Nice little shop. Moderate pricing. Highly recommend!
