We loved stopping at El Mexicano zapata, it happened to be salsa night and the atmosphere was great! It’s a family owned business, the team were fab and the food was delicious! Wish we could have them in the UK.
If you like spicy things, their spicy margs are fab! If you’re veggie - there’s loads of veggie options too.

Superb experience all around. Warm welcome by the owner. Amazing food. The Best enchilada I ever sunk my teeth into. Sangria better then in Spain! And to top it all off amazing entertainment. If you come to Rotorua and not visit this place for a bite to eat you will be making big mistake.
Good atmosphere, great services, excellent food. The nachos was surprisingly packed with flavours, the tacos was fresh and tasty, the quesadilla is savoury and delicious. Nice size portions too.
We went to El Mexicano for Sunday lunch and it was wonderful! We haven’t had authentic Mexican since arriving in New Zealand and they are definitely authentic! We had Chips and Guacamole(made fresh and delicious), chicken and beef fajitas, and the banana empanadas.
We are only visiting Rotorua, but we will always come for at least one meal every time we visit from now on!
Great Mexican food. Ceviche was delicious even though I’m not usually a fan of raw fish. Chicken wings were great with the chargrilled flavour and hot sauce.
El Mexicano is a very good restaurant! The boss and all his staff are perfect because of their amazing service, greetings, ordering and menu introductions, helping us to order the right foods. The atmosphere is also lovely, as it is very lively; accompanied by Mexican music and , occasionally, people dancing.
I was told this place has generous portion sizes and they really do. Just the fried bread and quesadillas was almost too much food for two very hungry people. But it was delicious. Great non-alcoholic drink options for those who don’t drink as well, fun and big mocktails.
Amazing food and great service. Anything on the menu is really delicious, the flavours are the best Mexican flavours I’ve tried and I live in Auckland. Would definitely come back next time I’m in Rotorua. Highly recommend this place, you will not be disappointed. The sauces on the side are also reallyyyy good, we bought sauces to take away. We went on Tuesday night and got to see salsa dance class!
The best Mexican food I have had here in NZ! We shared most of the tapas and everything was delicious! Great customer service and amazing atmosphere too! Can’t wait to come back!
What a lovely spot giving the chance to step into another world. The moment you open the door it just feels like you're in the right place for some fun.
Others have indicated the food is devine, and I must agree with them. Our meals were delicious and very reasonably priced. The staff welcoming and attentive. But wait, there's more!
The atmosphere is very Mexican and if you come on Friday or Saturday they have live music. That we missed out on, but I'm sure it'd only add to the fun.
Also Tuesday night from 6 to 9pm they have Free Salsa dancing, and I can only imagine what a fun night that would be.
So this is a wonderful and different place with great food. Thoroughly recommended.
